    That’s why modern buckets use a combination of structural steel, wear plate, forged components, and hard-facing overlays.

    2. Main Materials Used in Excavator Buckets

    Buckets are not made of one steel. Different areas use different grades according to stress and load.

    2.1 Structural Steel (Bucket Body)

    Used for:

    Shell, side walls, back plate, mounting frames

    Common grades:

    Q345 / Q355 (China)

    S355JR/J2 (Europe)

    A572 Grade 50 (USA)

    Features: good strength, easy welding, suitable for GP buckets.

    2.2 Wear-Resistant Steel (Hardox / NM / AR)

    Used for:

    Cutting edges

    Bottom wear plates

    Side edges

    Common grades:

    Hardox 400/450/500

    NM400/NM450/NM500

    AR400/AR500

    Features: high hardness, strong abrasion resistance, essential for sand, gravel, and rock.

    2.3 Forged or Cast Alloy Steel

    Used for:

    Side cutters

    Bosses & pin mounts

    Materials:

    42CrMo, 35CrMnSi, High manganese steel (Mn13/Mn18)

    Features: excellent impact toughness and density; critical for heavy digging.

    2.4 High-Manganese Steel (Work-Hardening Steel)

    Used for:

    Rock bucket lips

    Inner liners

    Features: becomes harder with impact; perfect for quarries and demolition.

    2.5 Hard-Facing & Overlay Protection

    Applied to:

    Cutting edges

    Wear strips

    Heel plates

    Types:

    Chromium carbide overlay

    Tungsten carbide hard-facing

    Features: creates a sacrificial wear layer that protects high-stress zones.
